William III (1694-1702), Shilling, 1696 Bristol mint, Mint Error - double struck to obverse and reverse, first laureate and draped bust right, B below, legend and toothed border surrounding, GVLIELMVS. III.DEI.GRA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, Lion of Nassau at centre, date either side of top crown, .MAG. BR. FRA. ET.HIB. REX. (Bull 1158; ESC 1081; S.3498). The mint error affecting both sides of the coin, with the obverse clearly most affected from 12 o’clock to 5 o’clock where the legend can be seen twice, the reverse most affected from 7 ‘clock to 12 o’clock, again with the legends being clearly legible. Graded by NGC as Mint Error Very Fine Details, Obverse Scratched, Double Struck.
This error being a clear result of the intense pace of the "Great Recoinage" that began in 1696.
