Description

George II (1727-60), gold Two Guineas, 1748, older laureate head left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, abbreviated Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, M.B.F. ET. H. REX. F.D. B.ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T ET. E., edge milled, 16.75g (MCE 295; EGC 577 R2; Schneider II 579; S.3669). Lightly polished with some nicks and bagmarks, red burnish at 4, 8, and 12 o’clock on both sides indicating possible repairs, graded by NGC as AU Details (Obverse Tooled), very rare.

NGC Certification 6674779-001

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on obverse as "George the Second by the Grace of God," and on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."

The calendar year output of gold in the year 1748 totalled £338,523.
