James II (1685-88), silver Crown, 1686, no stops in legend, first laureate and draped bust left, legend with no stops and toothed border surrounding, IACOBVS II DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, six strings to Irish harp, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX., edge inscribed in raised letters, +.DECVS. ET. TVTAMEN. . ANNO. REGNI. SECVNDO.+, 29.81g (Bull 741; ESC 77; S.3406). Toned a little unevenly with black patch on obverse, softly struck top and bottom of obverse as usual, wear to obverse toothed border with nick to rim, otherwise almost very fine, rare, graded by NGC as XF Details (Stained).

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland." Additionally on the edge as "An ornament and a safeguard, in the second year of the reign."
The output of silver coins for the calendar year of 1686 is the lowest of this short reign at a mere £59,814.
