Description

Charles I 1643-4 silver Crown type 4 Tower mint

Charles I (1625-49), silver Crown, c. 1643-1644, Tower Mint under Parliament, type 4, armoured King on horseback left with raised sword and flowing sash, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, CAROLVS. D: G: MAG: BRI: FRA: ET. HIB. REX., initial mark (P) both sides, rev. oval quartered shield of arms, CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO, 30.00g (Brooker 268 this coin; Cooper dies XXI/XXIX; N.2198; S.2761). Toned, horseman a little weak in parts as per usual, lightly struck on one part of legend both sides, otherwise a pleasing example of a Parliament issue Crown and rarely seen this nice, a bold very fine. The abbreviated obverse legend translates as "Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland." and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."
