AU55 | Charles II (1660-85), silver Shilling, first hammered issue (1660-61), crowned bust left, without mark of value, legend and toothed borders surrounding both sides, initial mark crown both sides, no stops either side of mint mark on obverse, CAROLVS. II. D. G. MAG. BRIT. FR. ET. HIB. REX, rev. long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, more squat smaller harp with seven strings, no stop above shield, CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO, 6.03g (Bull 272; ESC 1010; N.2762; S.3308). Toned, quite double struck, some flan flaws and weak in parts, an artful piece of work by Thomas Simon, graded by NGC as AU55.

NGC Certification 6133357-003, has been labelled as ESC 1009 when the coin is ESC 1010.

As of June 2022 this is the highest graded of the five graded as both ESC 1009 and ESC 1010 at NGC.

PCGS do not list them by ESC number and only by Spink number and have graded eight pieces one of which is a step finer.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the Second by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland"; and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."
