Description

George I (1714-27), gold Five Guineas, 1717, laureate head right, legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS. D.G. M. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. F. D., rev. crowned cruciform shields, incorporating the Arms of Hanover, sceptres in angles, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, BRVN ET. L. DVX S.R.I.A:TH ET. EL., edge inscribed in raised letters and dated, +DECVS. ET. TVTAMEN. ANNO. REGNI. SECVNDO+, 41.41g (Schneider 541; MCE 239; S.3626). Sharp and well-centred with blushes of red toning, minor surface rub and some smoothing to portrait, numerous bagmarks as are common for this large gold denomination, very fine and a rarer type Five Guineas.
