Description

THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE
JUSTINIANUS I, 527-565
Mint of Constantinopolis
1/3 Siliqua ca. 530. Obv. Helmeted bust of Constantinopolis to r. Rev. Large K. S. Bendall. Some Comments on the Anonymous Silver Coinage of the Fourth to Sixth Centuries A.D. RN158, 2002, Type 8. 0.33 g. Rare. Large planchet. Dark patina. Good very fine. This type was minted in 330 for the founding of the city of Constantinopolis. Justinian I struck this type again for the 200 year city celebrations. The minting was probably carried on in following years. Remarkable is the low weight. Most specimens weigh towards 1g. Purchased privately in 1973.
