Herod III Antipas, commonly known as Herod Antipas, was a 1st-century AD ruler of Galilee and Perea, regions located in present-day Israel and Jordan. He was born around 20 BC and was a son of Herod the Great and Malthace, a Samaritan woman. After the death of Herod the Great in 4 BC, his kingdom was divided among his sons, and Herod Antipas became tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, ruling from 4 BC to AD 39. He is most notably remembered for his role in the New Testament accounts, particularly for his involvement in the execution of John the Baptist and his encounters with Jesus of Nazareth. Herod Antipas married Phasaelis, the daughter of King Aretas IV of Nabatea, but later divorced her to marry Herodias, his niece and the wife of his half-brother Herod Philip, a move that led to political and military conflict with Aretas IV. His rule ended when Emperor Caligula exiled him to Gaul in AD 39, where he likely died.
