Description

Antoninus Pius AV Aureus. Rome, AD 153-154. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVII, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust to left / COS IIII, Emperor, togate, standing to left, holding globe in outstretched right hand. RIC III 233d; C. 315 var. (bust type); BMCRE 814; Biaggi 714; Calicó 1529 (same dies). 7.10g, 20mm, 6h.

Good Extremely Fine. Excessively Rare with this bust type; perhaps the fourth known example and only the second to come to auction in the past two decades.

From the Altstetten Collection, kept in the vault of Crédit Suisse Geneva (documentation available upon request) since 26 November 1969.
