The crudeness of the wounded in the decisive battle of Solferino, where Victor Emmanuel II led the French troops and the Kingdom of Sardinia that defeated the Austrians, caused the businessman Henri Dunant, a direct witness to the event, to found what would later be known such as the International Committee of the Red Cross.
