Description

IONIA, Kolophon. Circa 301-297 BC. AR Drachm (17,5mm, 4.05 g). With the name and types of Alexander III ‘the Great’. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, lion’s head left above torch; pentagram below throne. Price 1834.

This issue was possibly struck under Lysimachos after the defeat of Antigonos I Monophthalmos, as may be indicated by the prominent use of a lion’s head or forepart for the coinage of Kolophon from this time. A lion’s head does, however, appear on earlier issues struck circa 310-301, and as Price notes: “...the parallel of other letters and symbols shows that there was a smooth change from striking for Antigonos.”
