Description

★ Extremely rare. Donative Issue. ★

SAFFARID, time of Yaqub, Year 265. AR Drachm (3.28 gm; 26 mm). In the name of Abbasid khalif and his successor, obverse, lillah, followed by shahadah for Prophet Mohamad, followed by name of khalif "Al-Mu'tamid billah" al-amerin (co-regent and successor) Al-Muwaffaq, mint "Shiraz", year 265. By this time, Abbasid Khalif had re-captured provinces of Fars(Persis) and Khuzistan from Saffarids. Amr-ibn Layth had succeeded his brother Yaqub, ended the hostilities with the Abbasid khalif and in return received the govenorship of almost entire southern Iran. There is no mention of Yaqub or Amr on the text attesting to re-establishment of Abbasid power in Southern Iran. Extremely rare as all coins of the years of Yaqub's retreat are highly sought after and historically valuable. The value of re-establishment of Abbasid was so high that a donative issue was struck celebrating the re-capture of Shiraz and province of Persis which is among the very expensive pieces of early Islamic Persia. Choice EF. Toned.
