This coin was struck during the occupation of Egypt by the Sasanids who, in 614 besieged and conquered Jerusalem and in 615 also attempted to besiege Constantinople. Heraclius, with the help of the Church, led a series of victories over the army commanded by Shahrbarz, marching into the heart of the Persian empire and eventually conquering Nineve. In 628 King Khosrau II (possibly depicted on the obverse of this coin) was killed by his son Sheroe, who signed a peace treaty with Heraclius
