★ Skostokos I in the Name of Lysimachos ★

KINGS OF KABYLE. Skostokos I (Circa 285/1-273/2). Tetradrachm. Uncertain mint, struck in the name of Lysimachos.

Obv: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon.
Rev: BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛYΣIMAXOY / ΣTOΣTOKOY.
Athena seated left, holding Nike and spear over shoulder, resting elbow on shield. Control: cult pillar to inner left.

Fischer-Bossert, Lysimacheier 9; HGC 3.2, 1471.

Rare. Very little is known about Skostokos, who ruled southern Thrace in the early third century. The coins attributed to him, tetradrachms and drachms, have been found exclusively in Thrace and imitate the types of Lysimachus, usually bearing Skostokos' name in the exergue. The only symbol consistently found on the reverses of these coins is traditionally identified as a herm, leading to identification of the possible mint with Sestos or Ainos. Recent studies however reject this hypothesis, rather than a 'xoanon' with a human head the symbol could be considered an 'Agyeus' or cult pillar.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 16.80 g.
Diameter: 27 mm.
