AUGUSTUS (27 BC-14 AD). Denarius. Uncertain mint in Spain, possibly Colonia Patricia.

Obv: AVGVSTVS CAESAR.
Bare head right.
Rev: OB CIVIS / SERVATOS.
Oak wreath (Corona Civica) with ties drawn upward.

In the Roman world, wreaths were normally awarded in the distribution of military spoils, by the commander to those who had distinguished themselves in action. Although this was an award usually reserved for simple soldiers, it became a much desired goal for emperors as well. Augustus was awarded the 'corona civica' for saving the lives of his people by putting an end to civil wars.
