Description

Byzantine Pb Seal (14.65g, 31mm) John bishop and sakellarios (eleventh century)
Obv: Bust of the Virgin holding the medallion before her. Sigla: Μ(ήτ)ηρ Θ(εο)ῦ.
Rev: Inscription in five lines: Θεοτόκε β(οή)[θ(ει)] Ἰω(άννῃ) ἐπησκόπo(υ) (καὶ) σα[κ]ελα(ρίῳ)ς.
Sakellarios headed the sakellion (sakella or sakelle in the sense of "one's own", i.e. in cash, as opposed to the vestiarion which was intended for goods). Title confirmed from Emperor Zeno (474-491). In the early 8th century, the sakellarioi are directly mentioned as treasurers. According to Uspensky's Taktikon around 843, sakellarios became the general controller of the fiscal (secretary) offices, with notaries reporting to him in each department. The actual head of the sakellion department of this period was chartoularios tou sakelliou. The position continued until at least 1196. Although for a time it may have been merged with the logothetes megas by Alexius I Komnenos (r. 1081–1118). From the end of the 11th century, the prefix megas ("great") was added. Later the title of Church treasurer.

- protospatharios in charge of Lausiakos (πρωτοσπαθάριος τού Λαυσιακού), one of the main halls adjacent to Chrysotriklinos, serving as a conference room; the staff (oikeiakoi) of the Lausiakos units most likely also had functions related to preparing imperial banquets.
- protospatharios or katepano, or basilikoi anthropoi (πρωτοσπαθάριος / κατεπάνω τών βασιλικών), a corps of lower imperial officials, including foreigners; a title listed as one of stratarchai, thus denoting an unspecified military role.
His staff included lower-ranking officials (those of the spatarioi and kandidatoi), with the domestique as his main advisor.
- protospatharios tes Fiales (πρωτοσπαθάριος τής Φιάλης), acting as official referee for the rowers of the Byzantine navy
stationed around Constantinople.
The importance of the title decreased in the 11th century, it was last confirmed in 1115, although it was still registered by
Pseudo-Kodinos in the mid-14th century in 34th place in the judicial hierarchy between primmikerios and megas archon.
