Laureate head of Zeus on the left., Eagle with wings spread, attacking a hare on the left; behind, a thunderbolt in the field; between the hare and the eagle's tail, a reversed N., Superb specimen for a very rare coinage and type! Same die as the Jameson collection (no. 443) with the N reversed, this type is extremely rare. It is thought to have been struck during the campaign in Magna Graecia of Alexander I, uncle of Alexander III the Great, when he allied himself with the city of Tarentum to campaign in southern Italy. The absolutely magnificent portrait depicts Zeus, and is said to have been inspired by the statue of Zeus in the temple dedicated to him in Locres. The reverse is also inspired by the coinage of Agrigento, with a superb eagle hunting, according to J.P. Babelon. For reference, SNG-ANS 525., ΛOKΡON

Tête laurée de Zeus à droite., Aigle aux ailes déployées, attaquant un lièvre à gauche, dessous un globule; derrière, un foudre dans le champ; entre le lièvre et la queue de l'aigle, un N inversé., Superbe spécimen pour un monnayage et un type très rare ! Même coin que la collection Jameson (n°443) avec le N inversé, ce type est extrêmement rare. Il aurait été frappé au moment de la campagne en Grande Grèce d'Alexandre Ier, l'oncle d'Alexandre III le Grand, lorsque celui-ci s'est allié avec la cité de Tarente pour mener campagne en l'Italie du Sud. Le portrait, absolument magnifique représente Zeus, et serait inspiré de la statue de Zeus du temple qui lui est dédié à Locres.
