Laureate head of Louis XIV, aged and with short hair, on the right., Hand of justice and sceptre in saltire, flanked by four crowned lis., We face here a particularly interesting case of a reformation made on a doppia of the House of Savoy, struck in Turin for Victor-Amédée II in 1676, part of whose crowned shield is perfectly identifiable under the head of Louis XIV and the date legible under the legend at 4h. The flan appears to have been scratched, as if it had been laminated or filed beforehand in order to make the underlying type disappear, without having entirely succeeded. We have to wonder about such a practice, as reformation only makes sense in the case of French coinage, for which an obligation applied. The engraving seems good and the various hallmarks are present: sun and eagle's head on the obverse, shell after IMP on the reverse, so we cannot rule out an internal practice at the mint of Lyon. Numerous false reformations of this type were reported and known in 1704 with the hallmarks of this mint (cf. Clairand, 2023, p. 337, note 2), so it is not impossible that we are dealing with an illegal reformation of foreign coinage of mass and diameter almost identical to the louis, in order to bring it to circulation on French territory at a higher price than its intrinsic gold content. It should be remembered that the mint of Lyon was located in the immediate vicinity of the Duchy of Savoy, where our doppia originated, which greatly facilitated these operations of false reformations or reformations on coins that were not intended to be reformed. Tête laurée de Louis XIV âgé et les cheveux courts à droite., Main de justice et sceptre posés en sautoir, cantonnés de quatre lis couronnés., Cas de figure particulièrement intéressant, d'une réformation effectuée sur une doppia de la maison de Savoie, frappée à Turin pour Victor-Amédée II de 1676, dont une partie de l'écu couronné est parfaitement identifiable sous la tête de Louis XIV et le millésime lisible sous la légende à 4h. Le flan semble avoir subit de fortes rayures, comme si préalablement laminé afin d'en faire disparaître en partie le type sous-jacent, sans y être entièrement parvenu. Il faut s'interroger sur une telle pratique, la réformation n'ayant de sens que dans le cas des monnayages français, pour lesquelles une obligation s'appliquait. La gravure semble bonne et les différentes marques sont présentes: soleil et tête d'aigle au droit, coquille après IMP au revers, n'excluons donc pas une pratique interne à l'atelier de Lyon.De nombreuses fausses réformations sont signalées et connues pour ce type en 1704 avec les poinçons de cet atelier (cf. Clairand, 2023, p. 337, note 2), il n'est donc pas impossible que nous ayons affaire à une pratique illégale sur un monnayage étranger de masse et diamètre quasiment identiques au louis, afin de l'écouler sur le territoire français à un cours plus élevé que son contenue d'or intrinsèque. Rappelons que l'atelier de Lyon se situe à proximité immédiate du duché de Savoie d'où provient notre doppia, ce qui facilite fortement ces opérations de fausse réformations ou de réformation sur des monnaies non destinées à l'être.
