Zeugitana, 1/2 Shekel, ca. 213-210 BC, Carthage, SNG-Cop:383. Graded NGC Ch AU 55-58 - Strike: 5/5 - Surface: 3/5., Head of Melkart left, wearing laurel wreath., Elephant advancing right. Punic A in exergue., This 1/2 shekel was struck in the context of the 2nd Punic War to finance the Sicilian campaign of 213-210 B.C. This is a magnificent specimen, with some roughness in the fields but with a splendid portrait and an especially beautiful elephant in the reverse. Somewhat off-center, the strike nevertheless allows us to appreciate the entirety of the impressive animal. We note the ferocious look of the beast, which the Carthaginians used for military purposes. We know that Hannibal made them cross the Alps, but very few survived this ordeal and all perished before the end of the war.

Zeugitana, 1/2 Shekel, ca. 213-210 BC, Carthage, Gradée NGC Ch AU 55-58 - Strike: 5/5 - Surface: 3/5, Tête à gauche de Melkart, lauré., Éléphant à droite. A en punique en exergue., Ce 1/2 shekel a été frappé dans le contexte de la 2ème guerre punique pour financer la campagne sicilienne de 213-210 avant J.-C. Il s'agit ici d'un magnifique exemplaire, présentant quelques rugosités dans les champs mais dont le portrait et surtout l'éléphant sont magnifiquement représentés. Quelque peu décentrée, la frappe laisse néanmoins apprécier l'entièreté de l'impressionnant animal. On note le regard féroce de la bête, dont les carthaginois font un usage militaire. On sait qu'Hannibal leur fait traverser les Alpes, mais très peu survivrons à cette épreuve et tous périrons avant la fin de la guerre.
