Four Fragments of a Roman Bronze Military Diploma
Issued AD 113.
The present four fragments (and a very small, illegible fragment) are further evidence for a constitution issued by Trajan in AD 113 for the troops in Pannonia Superior. The diploma was issued under the provincial governor Lucius Minicius Natalis to an unknown auxiliary soldier following twenty-five years of service, awarding to him Roman citizenship. The text of the fragments of tabella II reads as follows, starting with the inner side: [HONESTA MI]SSIONE QVO[RVM NOMI] [NA SVBSCRIP]TA SVNT IP[SIS LIBERIS POS] [TERISQVE] EORVM CIVIT[ATEM DEDIT] [ET CONV]BIVM CVM VX[ORIBVS QVAS] [TVNC HAB]VISSENT CVM E[ST CIVITAS] [IIS DATA A]VT SI QVI [CAELIBES ESSENT][CVM IIS] QVAS [P]OSTEA [DVXISENT] [DVMTAXAT SING]VLI SI[NGVLAS]. The outer side features the names of witnesses: [..TR]OPHIM[I] [..T]HALL[I] [..] PARATI.
Dimensions of the two larger main fragments: H 67 mm, L 63 mm (together); two smaller fragments: H 28 mm, L 44 mm (together) From the collection of an Austrian Art dealer. Acquired on the European Art Market from 1995 to present.
