A ROMAN BRONZE THEATRE MASK APPLIQUE
Circa 1st-2nd century AD.
Well modelled applique in the form of a male tragic theatrical mask. The expressive face with furrowed brow, deep set eyes, open mouth and curly beard is framed by cork-screw curls. The back is hollow and filled with lead for attachment.
H 42 mm Ex European private collection, acquired on the German art market in the late 1990s.
