A SMALL ROMAN BRONZE STATUETTE OF A BOUND BARBARIAN
Circa 2nd-3rd century AD.
The statuette depicts a bound male captive with a well-articulated face, curly hair, and a long, full beard. He is tied tightly with a rope that runs from the neck down before his knees and around the ankles. The statuette features four round holes: two horizontal, and two vertical. The function of these rare artefacts with their harsh depiction is unknown. As they were predominantly found along the Limes, some connection with the Roman military would be plausible.
