AN ELABORATE EARLY ROMAN SILVER-GILT AUCISSA FIBULA
Circa 1st century AD.
A richly decorated silver-gilt fibula with divided bow with knobs on the sides ('Bagendon Fibula'). The head plate is decorated with a wolf-head protome; a further stylised wolf-head adorns the foot that terminates in a large spherical knob. Encrusted with hornsilver; cleaning scratches. One knob missing, one detached. Probably unique! For the type in general, see E. Riha, Die römischen Fibeln aus Augst und Kaiseraugst (Augst 1979), Type 5.4.
