★ Nostell Priory Collection ★

AN ATTIC LEKANIS FROM THE NOSTELL PRIORY COLLECTION Circa 2nd half of 5th century BC. Black glazed pottery lekanis with a reserved band above the foot decorated with black glazed hatched lines, a reserved band around the lip marked with a black glazed wavy pattern and darker red double lines marked beneath on the exterior of the body, a circular foot reserved on part of the base and marked with a black glazed annule, and two handles with splayed terminals. Circular lid not preserved. Handwritten collector's mark on the base. H 60 mm, Diameter 128 mm (without handles)

Ex private collection Prof. Zweymüller, Vienna. Sold at Christie's London 1975. Before, Nostell Priory Collection, Yorkshire. Acquired by Charles Winn, 8th Baronet of Nostell, from Naples in 1819 and sailed for England on 9th February 1819.
