MYSIA. Cyzicus. Commodus, 177-192. Medallion (Bronze, 42 mm, 33.87 g, 1 h). ΑY ΚΑΙ Μ ΑYΡΗΛΙ ΚΟΜΜΟΔΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Commodus to right, seen from the rear. Rev. ƐΠΙ CΤΡΑ ΑYΡΗ ΜEIΔΙΟY ΑCΙΑΡΧΟY ΚYΖΙΚΗ/ ΝEΟΚΟΡΩΝ Hygieia standing to right, feeding serpent from her patera; to right Asclepius standing facing, his head turned to left, holding serpent-staff; between twem, Telesphorus standing, facing. Apparently an unpublished variety, combining the obverse die of RPC online 9167 (Bani 16), with a reverse die of RPC online 754 (von Fritze, VI 6b). A surprising new find! This is the biggest (and the rarest) medallion of Cyzicus struck under Commodus. Some rough areas, otherwise, good very fine.
