Description

IONIA. Teos. Late 5th century BC. One twenty-fourth stater (Gold, 8.5 mm, 0.96 g). Griffin, with its left forepaw raised, seated to right. Rev. ΤΗ -Ι/AΝOC Shallow circular incuse quartered by two raised lines, on which the legend appears in very small letters. Unique and unpublished, save for its previous auction appearances. Cf. BMC pl. 30, 10. Extremely rare. Very fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Sincona 10, 27 May 2013, 150 and from the Velkov Collection, Vinchon 24 November 1994, 144, acquired in the early 1970s.
