Description

IONIA. Ephesos. Circa 180-67 BC. Cistophoric Tetradrachm (Silver, 28.5 mm, 12.71 g, 12 h), c. 166-160. Basket (cista mystica) from which snake coils; around, ivy wreath with fruits. Rev. Two snakes coiled around a bow case; to left, EΦΕ; to right, head of Artemis to right. Kleiner & Noe Series 3, 5. SNG Copenhagen 306 ( same obverse die ). An extremely rare early cistophorus; Noe recorded only two examples, in the ANS and in Copenhagen. Well-struck, sharp and toned. Good extremely fine.
