Description

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Circa 421-420 BC. Tetrobol (Silver, 16 mm, 2.38 g, 1 h), Olynthos. Ο-Λ-Υ-Ν-Θ Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. Χ-Α-Λ-ΚΙ-ΔΕ-ΩΝ Kithara with seven strings; all within a shallow incuse square. Robinson & Clement Group D, 38 (A32/P23, same dies ). Traité pl. CCCXIII, 10. Extremely rare, especially with the mint name on the obverse ; a splendid toned example, attractively centered and engraved in an outstanding, full-blown Classical style of the highest artistic value. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Peus 366, 29 October 2000, 110.

Apparently two examples of this extremely rare tetrobol turned up in 2000: this piece in October and, earlier in June, a very much inferior example (= CNG 54, 14 June 2000, lot 439 - later in Roma 5, 23 March 2013, lot 223).
