Baerll Adriaanszoon, 1786. HOC DEFENSORE BEATA (= Blessed with this defender ) On the right, the Dutch Maiden seated, deep in thought; attacked, from the left, by the Anglo-Hanoverian unicorn and the Imperial eagle, but protected from them by a shield, with the arms of France, held by a hand extended from the clouds; in the exergue, I.V. BAERLL.AD.Z. FECIT. Rev. GAUDETE BATAVI. (= let the Batavians rejoice ) Mercury to left, nailing the shields of France and the Dutch Republic on a stele; in exergue, HOC.MONUM.DUPL.
