Description

European Medals from 1513 to 1788
Great Britain. Anne, 1702-1707-1714. Medal (Silver, 42mm, 30.22 g 12), on the Battle of Oudenarde, with a tribute to Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough, by P. H. Müller, Augsburg, 1708. SALVTARIVM SIDERVM APPARITIO (= the appearance of propitious stars ) / EVGENII ET MARLEBORVGII FELIX CONIVNCTO (= the propitious conjunction of Eugene and Marlborough ) Castor and Pollux charging right on horseback. On the edge, NIL DESPERANDVM TEVCRO DVCE ET AVSPICE TEVCRO (= naught to be despaired under the guidance and auspices of Teucer = Horace, Car. I, vii. 27) Rev. VANDOM IN FLANDR SCVT N ITAL EVNDEM FVGIT ET VT FVGIENDVS DOCET ( =Vendome flees from the same person in Flanders as in Italy and shows how he is to be fled from ) / MVLT MILL GALLORVM CLADES AD ALDENAR MDCCIIX D XI IVL (= the slaughter of many thousands of French at Oudenarde, 11 July 1708 ) Scene of the battle of Oudenarde with the walled city in the background. MI II, p. 324, 150. Van Loon V, 106, ii. Rare. A lovely, sharp, beautifully struck and toned example. Virtually as struck. Oudenarde, now in Belgium, was the scene of the major allied victories in the War of the Spanish Succession. French forces, under the divided command of Louis, Duke of Burgundy and the Duke of Vendôme, made a number of strategic mistakes and, thus, were heavily defeated by the combined forces of Great Britain, the Empire, the Netherlands, Prussia and their allies.
