MACEDON. Neapolis. Circa 500-480 BC. Stater (Silver plated bronze, 19 mm, 6.86 g), plated. Gorgoneion facing with extended tongue. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Dewing 1064. SNG ANS 223. Svoronos pl. 9, 33. Lightly toned, well-struck in high relief, and with a powerful gorgon's head. Good very fine.
When first made this would have been a particularly dangerous forgery, since the artistic quality is virtually indistinguishable from that of a genuine piece. However, the low weight is a give-away.
