Description

Q. Sicinius, 49 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.87 g, 6 h), Rome. FORT P·R Diademed head of Fortuna to right. Rev. III - VIR / Q.SICINIVS Filleted palm branch and winged caduceus in saltire; above the crossing, wreath. Babelon (Sicinia) 5. Crawford 440/1. CRI 410. RBW 1555. Sydenham 938. Good very fine.

The moneyer Q. Sicinius came from a noble family but is otherwise little known. He sided with Pompey during the Civil War and fled east along with the rest of the Pompeians once Caesar occupied Rome. The types on this issue show Sicinius' sympathies: the legend and the head of Fortuna on the obverse refer to the Fortune of the Roman People, while the design on the reverse consists exclusively of symbols that refer to Pompey's accomplishments.
