Description

THESSALY. Pharsalos. Late 5th-early 4th century BC. Drachm (Silver, 20 mm, 5.96 g, 3 h), signed by the engraver Telephantos, with his initials on the obverse and the reverse. Head of Athena to right, wearing crested Attic helmet with raised cheek pieces, in the field behind her neck, in small letters, ΤΗ. Rev. Φ-Α/Ρ-Σ (partially retrograde) Thessalian cavalryman, wearing petasos, chlamys and chiton, and holding a lagobolon over his right shoulder riding horse prancing to right; TH below exergue line. BCD Thessaly II 639 (same dies). HGC 4, 624. Lavva 89b (V45/R52). Lightly toned. Good very fine.
