Description

Nero, 54-68. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.07 g, 6 h), Rome, 64-65. NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS Laureate head of Nero to right. Rev. IVPPITER CVSTOS Jupiter seated to left, holding thunderbolt in right hand and sceptre in left. Cohen 119. RIC I 53. Toned. Marks and scrapes, flan fault on obverse; within which, green encrustation over silver core, otherwise, very fine.

From the Collection of Prof. James M. Collier, acquired in Amsterdam in 2013.

This lot is sold to benefit the Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics offered by the American Numismatic Society.

Metallurgical analysis targeting the obverse flan fault shows that this coin is; 91.6% silver, 5.01% copper, 1.77% iron, 0.93% lead, 0.629% gold, 0.051% bismuth.
