SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.11 g, 11 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving slow quadriga to right, holding kentron in right hand and reins in left; above, Nike flying to right to crown horses. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣ-Ι-Ο-Ν diademed head of Arethusa to right; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Cf. Boehringer 189, (V85/R-; unpublished reverse die, but similar to R130 ). HGC 2, 1306. SNG ANS 60 ( same obverse die ). Light toning, reverse struck from an interestingly engraved and apparently unpublished die. Die break on obverse , otherwise, very fine.
