Description

Lucilla, Augusta, 164-182. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.04 g, 12 h), Rome (?), 164-169. LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F Draped bust of Lucilla to right. Rev. VOTA / PVBLI / CA within a laurel wreath. BMC ( M. Aurelius ) 329. Cohen 98. RIC 791. Well- struck but of curious style ( see below ). Lightly toned. About extremely fine.

From the Collection of Prof. James M. Collier, ex H. J. Berk, MBS 97, 12 August 1997, 369.

The style of this portrait on this coin is quite peculiar: it is either from an irregular, but official, temporary mint, or a contemporary imitation, probably from the East.

This lot is sold to benefit the Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics offered by the American Numismatic Society.
