Julius Caesar, late spring - early summer 48 BC. Denarius (Silver, 18 mm, 3.98 g, 11 h), mint moving with Caesar. Female head to right (Clementia?), wearing an oak wreath, a pendant earring and a pearl necklace; her hair bound into a jeweled bun at the back; behind, LII (= 52 = Caesar’s age). Rev. CAE - SAR Trophy of Gallic arms on a tree trunk (oval shield, horned helmet, mail armour and carnyx; on right, axe surmounted by a wolf’s head. Babelon (Julia) 26. BMC 3955. Crawford 452/2. CRI 11. Sydenham 1009. Sharply struck and clear, with a variegated toning. Struck on a slightly tight flan. Extremely fine.
