CORINTHIA. Corinth. Circa 500-450 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 8.62 g, 12 h). [Ϙ] Pegasos flying to left, with a curved wing and bridled. Rev. Head of Athena to left, with a crestless Corinthian helmet raised on the top of her head, her hair tied in a braid at the back and wearing a pearl necklace. BCD Corinth -. Ravel 134 (P85/T101). Weber 3657 ( same dies ). With a fine Archaic head of Athena on the reverse. Porous surfaces, a lightly struck obverse and with a die break (?) on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
The curious mark on the reverse, generally thought to be a die break, has been identified as symbol by some commentators. In fact, it has been suggested that it is actually a dolphin, since it is a rather odd shape for a die break (though it is equally an odd shape for a dolphin!).
