ISLANDS OFF ATTICA, Aegina. Circa 550-530/25 BC. Stater (Silver, 20.5 mm, 12.17 g). Sea turtle seen from above, head in profile, with thin collar and row of eight pellets down its back. Rev. Incuse square of 'Union-Jack' design. ACGC 114. Asyut Group IV. HGC 6, 429. Meadows, Aegina, Group IIa-b. Milbank pl. I, 4. Traité II, 1, 1013 and pl. XXIX, 8. Struck in high relief and attractively toned. Minor marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the Collection of Prof. James M. Collier, acquired from Spink on 21 August 2000, ex Leu Numismatics 77, 11 May 2000, 212, and from the collections of Captain E.G. Spencer Churchill at Northwick Park, Christie's, 7 December 1965, 106 and of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Schlessinger 13, 4 February 1935, 968.

This lot is sold to benefit the Collier Prize in Ancient Numismatics offered by the American Numismatic Society.
