Description

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Stater (Gold, 20 mm, 8.48 g, 1 h), uncertain mint, probably an early posthumous issue of the 270s. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon above his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑXΟΥ Athena seated to left on throne, holding Nike with her outstretched right hand and resting her left elbow on grounded shield; behind, transverse spear. MAST 2.77 ( this coin ). Apparently unpublished : Müller -, Thompson -, but cf. Roma E232, 2017, 295 for a coin with an obverse engraved by the same hand. Extremely rare and beautifully executed, with an unusually realistic 'portrait, but of whom?. Somewhat weakly struck and with minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a European collection, ex Giessener Münzhandlung 44, 3 April 1989, 179.
