Description

IONIA. Ephesos. 405/404 BC. Double Siglos (Silver, 20 mm, 11.19 g, 11 h). Σ - Υ - Ν Infant Herakles ( Herakliskos ) kneeling to right, strangling two snakes, which are twined around his arms, holding the neck of one in each hand. Rev. Ε - Φ / Π - Ε Bee seen from above. Hekatomnos 2, O2/R2, a = SNG von Aulock 7821 = SNG Lockett 2808 = Weber 5836( all this coin ) . Very rare. Overstruck on a stater of Aegina. Very fine.

From an American collection, from the Exceptional Private Collection, Leu 76, 27 October 1999, 167, and from the collections of H. von Aulock, Bank Leu 18, 5 May 1977, 186, R. C. Lockett, Glendining & Co 21 February 1961, 2287, C. S. Bement, Naville VII, 23 June 1924, 1446, and that of Sir H. Weber, acquired in Greece in 1898.
