Description

PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy II Philadelphos, 285-246 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 14.21 g, 11 h), uncertain mint on Cyprus, possibly Paphos, c. 275. Diademed head of Ptolemy I to right, wearing aegis around his neck (not seen here). Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ Eagle, with closed wings, standing left on thunderbolt; behind, shield; to left, ΠT above YΓA monogram. Lorber 470. SNG Copenhagen 523. Svoronos 535. Rare; A toned example with a fine portrait of Ptolemy I Soter. Countermarked three times and with a test cut on the reverse, otherwise, nearly very fine.

From an old European collection formed before 2000.
