Description

MACEDON, Chalkidian League. Olynthos. Circa 358-355 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 14.43 g, 12 h), under the magistrate Polyxenos. Laureate head of Apollo to right, with a few locks of his hair falling down the back of his neck. Rev. Χ-Α-Λ-ΚΙΔ - ΕΩΝ Lyre with seven strings; above, in small letters, ΕΠΙ Π-ΟΛΥΞ-ΕΝΟΣ. Robinson & Clement Group R, 102 (A68/P87). An elegant coin struck on an oblong flan, giving it a gem-like appearance. With a splendidly noble head of Apollo, albeit with a somewhat supercilious expression. Nicely toned and struck in high relief. Reverse a little tight, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

Property of a Late Collector, acquired from Tradart in 1991.
