Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, Circa 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.24 g, 11 h), circa 466-460. Charioteer driving a quadriga walking to right, holding a goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in the exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣV-RΑΚ-Ο-ΣΙΟ-Ν Pearl-diademed head of Arethusa to right, wearing a pendant earring and a pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Boehringer 408 (V211/R288). Randazzo 525 ( same dies ). SNG ANS 128. A beautiful, very attractively toned coin, sharply struck from fresh dies. Extremely fine.
