LOW COUNTRIES, Brabant. Antwerp. Second half 16th century. (Bronze, 16 x 15 mm, 4.06 g), coin weight of an Ecu d'or (pistolet) , Jacob Jansz de Backer (?), maker. Rev. Jerusalem cross with triplet of pellets in each quarter within quadrilobe; in external voids, single pellet; all within circle of perls; at the centre, c/m of a sun with rays. Blank or extremely worn reverse die. The sun countermark refers to a French 1/2 Louis d'or coin which had the same weight. Good very fine.
From the collection of a Dutch specialist.
The obverse is very close to coin weights produced by de Backer in Antwerp between 1644-1669. However, a certain attribution to a maker is impossible.
