Description

ARGOLIS. Argos. Circa 370-350 BC. Stater (Silver, 23 mm, 12.19 g, 12 h). Head of Hera to right, her hair flowing down the back of her neck, wearing stephane ornamented with palmettes, earring and a necklace of pearls;along the top of the stephane, almost imperceptible letters. Rev. ΑΡΓΕΙΩΝ Two dolphins swimming in a circle to the left; between them, crab swimming upwards. BCD Peloponnesos 1061 ( this coin ). BMC 40. SNG Lockett 2495 ( same dies ). Extremely rare. Good very fine.

From an American collection, ex Nomos 10, 18 May 2015, 43, the Spina Collection, Nomos 7, 15 May 2013, 111 and the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 1061.

As noted in our earlier catalogue, there appear to be a number of uncertain letters, possibly ΗΡΑ, on the top of Hera’s stephane. This has never previously been noticed: understandably since the depth of relief made their full striking extremely difficult.
