Description

LUCANIA. Poseidonia. Circa 530-500 BC. Stater (Silver, 31 mm, 7.47 g, 12 h). ΠOM (retrograde) Poseidon, nude save for a chlamys draped over his shoulders, advancing to right, brandishing a trident held with his upraised right hand and extending his left arm before him; all within a guilloche border. Rev. ΠOM Poseidon, nude save for a chlamys draped over his shoulders, advancing to left, brandishing trident held with his upraised right hand and extending his left arm before him; all within a herringbone border; all incuse. BMC 5. HGC 1, 1150. HN III 1107. Cf. SNG ANS 614. SNG Lloyd 428. Rare, attractively toned and clear. Very fine.
