★ Remembrance of a Lucky Escape ★

Domitian, 81-96. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.21 g, 6 h), Rome, 82-83. MP CAES DOMITIANVS AVG P M Laureate head of Domitian to right. Rev. IVPPITER CONSERVATOR Eagle standing facing on thunderbolt, head left, wings displayed. BMC 52. Cohen 320. RIC 144. Flan crack and porosity, otherwise, extremely fine.

Domitian had a close connection to Jupiter Conservator. In the year 69 Domitian was in Rome when Vitellius abdicated. However, his followers did not agree and trapped several supporters of Vespasian on the Capitol - among them: Domitian. He managed a lucky escape disguised as a priest of Isis and was grateful to Jupiter Conservator ever after.
