Description

ATTICA. Athens. Circa 393-355 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 22 mm, 17.13 g, 9 h), struck on a fresh flan, circa 380. Head of Athena to right, with profile eye, wearing crested Attic helmet with palmette and three olive leaves. Rev. ΑΘΕ Owl standing right, head facing; behind, olive spray and crescent moon. HGC 4, 1598. SNG Copenhagen 63. Very well centered and struck, a splendid example of the earlier 4th century coinage of Athens. Good very fine.

Most of the preserved 4th century tetradrachm coinage of Athens were struck on flans that were folded and, thus, most often misshapen. This is an example of one of the much rarer, earlier issues: it has an unusually well-centered obverse with virtually all of the details of Athena's portrait on the flan.
