THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Uncertain. 480-450 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 6.5 mm, 0.25 g). Monkey squatting to left. Rev. Round shield within incuse square. Unpublished except from A. Tzamalis, Nonismatika Khronika 17 (1998) no 67. Obverse off center, otherwise, good extremely fine.
From a European collection formed before 2005.
The squatting monkey reminisces the squatting satyr on the trihemiobols of Siris (SNG ANS 972). It is attractive to link those two issues although the coins of Siris are definetely anterior to our coin. The sure is that they both originate from the Pangaean district.
